Good Neighbor Stuff 2.25 Million Views and Counting
Published by Blake Macleod | Filed under Random Thoughts
Sketch comedy group Good Neighbor Stuff released this spoof video about the Jaime Lynn Spears pregnancy which has received 2.25 million views in just three weeks. As you may know, I am a big fan of Good Neighbor and have enjoyed all of their previous video’s. However, of all their previous video’s posted on YouTube none have received more than than 135,000 views. Most of the videos hover around 5-10 thousand views. So what is it about this video that got so much attention. It is simple, GNS picked a topic that people were searching for. This seems simple enough, but so many people never frame their work for search. You could have the best video in the world, but if nobody is searching for it, nobody is going to see it. When the word broke that Jaime Lynn Spears was prego, millions of people started searching. By acting quickly GNS was able to take advantage of this trend and get eyeballs on their work.
Signs (without Mel Gibson) 135,000 views and My Mom’s a MILF 80,000 views took advantage of search term popularity as well. By adding the (without Mel Gibson) GNS took advantage of anyone who is searching for Mel Gibson. Search for Mel Gibson on YouTube and Signs (without Mel Gibson) is on the first page of the search results. Search MILF and My Mom’s a MILF shows up on the third page. I think that we all can agree the MILF probably gets a lot of search queries. By contrast, one of the groups funniest video’s Kwanzaafied has only 3,500 views. The title has no popular search string and is not even a real word, therefore it will go widely unnoticed.
I am not saying that you should just title all your videos Paris Hilton Sex Tape, but with a little creativity you can position your video’s to receive maximum exposure. If GNS simply named their video Signs it would have been a very appropriate title. But by playing on the M. Night Shyamalan film Signs starring Mel Gibson, GNS added more depth to the title as well as increasing its search friendlines. So big ups GNS, you seem to be grasping this idea very well. Keep the funny video’s coming.
